Child health

Trends in child mortality: The global under-five mortality rate declined by 56% from 93 deaths per 1000 live births in 1990 to 41 in 2016. All WHO regions have halved their under-five mortality rates in the same time period. The burden of under-five deaths remains unevenly distributed. About 73% of under-five deaths occurred in two regions in 2016, WHO Africa (48%) and WHO South-East Asia (25%). The highest under-five mortality rate remains in the WHO African Region (76.5 per 1000 live births), almost 8 times higher than that in the WHO European Region (9.6 per 1000 live births).
